Dieses Buch hatte ich dabei, um mir die Zeit im Wartezimmer zu verkürzen. Nach nicht einmal fünfundzwanzig kurzen Seiten sah ich mich verzweifelt nach anderem Lesetoff um: die üblichen Zeitschriften, meinetwegen sogar die Info-Broschüre über Organspenden oder den Beipackzettel meiner Medikamente, alles besser als noch ein paar Seiten "Convenience Store Woman." Dieses Buch war so ganz und gar nicht mein Fall, es war, als müsse ich lesen, wie jemand Nudelwasser zum Kochen bringt. Ich bin mir nicht einmal sicher, was genau diese Abneigung schon nach wenigen Seiten und den absoluten Unwillen, trotz der Kürze des Buches, durchzuhalten, in mir ausgelöst hat. Ich fand die Handlung banal, ja, aber vielleicht hätte sich das geändert. Auf jeden Fall erinnerte mich der Schreibstil - der aber wohl zu der Verfassung der Protagonistin passen soll? - an einen Schulaufsatz in schlechter Übersetzung.In Japan hat der Roman, so konnte ich nachlesen, wohl enthusiatische Kritiken bekommen und seine Autorin berühmt gemacht. Eigentlich hätte mir die im Buch enthaltene Kritik am Zwang zu Konformität in einer Leistungsgesellschaft und/oder einer "normalen" Frauenrolle zusagen müssen. Hätte sie auch, wenn ich ihr in anderer Form, in einem anderen Buch, begegnet wäre. Zwei Sterne, denn es handelt sich hier um einen klaren Fall von "Gefällt mir nicht".
Having read a lot of enthusiastic reviews I was rather disappointed by this novel. It does not seem thought through and is full of repetitions. These repetitions dont seem to be a matter of style but just a way to hammer the protagonist into your brain without further exploring / describing a plot. Such a pity. This novel should have been shortened/edited and released as a short story instead.
I think it's hard to properly call this a novel. It's printed in a large text size and leading so that it fills out enough pages to pretend to be a novella. It's a short story. But a decent short story, which I think would rate 4 stars, if not for its somewhat poor translation. The translator made odd decisions: several food names are translated from meaningful Japanese names to meaningless generic terms---onigiri becomes "rice balls", inarizushi becomes "sushi pockets". Yet leaves untranslated other food names---yakitori---and other Japanese terms that would be unknown to a general audience ---irashaimase, suica. This reads clumsy. The language is generally stiff, and beyond the stiffness intended by the subject.
A very nice and easy read. Starts a bit slow, right after you think perhaps it is not for me, the story gets very interesting. Me like it 😊
